Awards Show Junkie: Grammys 2015

Another award show has come and gone. I like to evaluate the clothes at awards shows, but I'm having trouble with this for two reasons: 1. The #AskHerMore campaign, and 2. I didn't really like a lot this year.

In response to #1, I will offer another random bit of information or a personal thought on the person whose fashion I'm reviewing. In response to #2... well, there is no response to #2. I had a hard time even finding 5 to put in my top 5. Meh.

Top 5

Taylor Swift in Elie Saab (Source: Larry Busacca/Getty Images)

Beautiful colors. The girl knows how to work what she has, what she has are ridiculously long legs. I'm glad she's trying different things in terms of fashion (and music I guess, although I feel like she's been a pop artist much longer than the few months since 1989 came out).

Beyond fashion: After years of not being a fan, I can now admit that I like TSwift. "Style" has been stuck in my head for weeks.

Gwen Stefani in Atelier Versace (Source: Christopher Polk/Getty)

She's just so cool. I love the sculptural detailing on the bodice. I kind of missed her signature red lip though.

Beyond fashion: No Doubt's album Tragic Kingdom was my prized possession in 96-97. I got it as a Christmas gift from my parents and was thrilled.

Anna Kendrick in Band of Outsiders (Source: Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP)

It seems I like pants this year. Yes, the sexy black pantsuit is kind of a red carpet staple, but when something is this timeless, it's ok to repeat.

Beyond fashion: My husband has a thing for Anna Kendrick.

Jane Lynch (Source: Larry Busacca/Getty)

I searched high and low but couldn't find information on who she's wearing. I know she might be an unlikely choice for a top 5, but I love the menswear look and I love that she wears what she's comfortable in. This is the kind of look I wish I could pull off.

Beyond fashion: Anyone besides me still watching Glee? Sue has gone off the deep end, but I still love that she writes in her journal.

Haim (Este in Chloe, Danielle and Alana in Stella McCartney) (Source: Larry Busacca/Getty)

These are the cool girls. Again with the pants. I'm obsessed with pants. (The dress is good too!)

Beyond fashion: I've played their song "The Wire" hundreds of times on Spotify. I still do not know the words and make all of them up as I go along. Also, I am wearing pants myself. So cool.

Bottom 5

Kim Kardashian in Jean Paul Gaultier (Source: Christopher Polk/Getty)

It's a bedazzled bathrobe. Like the haircut though.

Beyond fashion: What can I say about Kim Kardashian that hasn't already been said? Or Instagrammed?

Madonna in Givenchy (Source: Larry Busacca/Getty)

Ok, her body is in great shape, but this is a costume. Why?

Beyond fashion: My mom wasn't a fan of Madonna. When I was in 6th grade and my jazz group was supposed to dance to "Material Girl" and I was looking to stir up drama, I told a few people I might not be able to perform because of my mom's strong feelings about Madonna. When my mom heard this, she laughed at me. Anyway, I performed.

Katharine McPhee in Emilio Pucci (Source: Christopher Polk/Getty)

I saw this dress turn up on a few best-dressed lists, but I just can't get on board. It looks wrinkled to me. I don't like the slicked back hair either. I feel like I have no idea who she is, based on her fashion choices - she seems a little all over the map (and not in a good way).

Beyond fashion: I wasn't a fan when she was on American Idol, and I regret that now. She can definitely sing.

Charli XCX in Jeremy Scott for Moschino (Source: Larry Busacca/Getty)

Appreciate the tuxedo attempt, but the fit isn't good and the white to pale pink ombre isn't doing it for me.

Beyond fashion: The Lennon sisters covered Charli's song "Boom Clap" and it's beautiful. I play it now when trying to get the Bean to take a nap and lays her head down on my shoulder when it comes on. Then I hold her while we sway back and forth until she lets out a little sigh and I know she's asleep. Then I feel teary because she's the sweetest little girl and my entire world. So thanks, Charli and Lennon sisters.

Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell (Source: Larry Busacca/Getty)

Compared to a dress made of meat, I like this. Compared to everything else, I do not. I think it kind of looks like something a porn star would wear.

Beyond fashion: Is she going to put out new music soon? I feel like she just hasn't recaptured the magic (yes, magic) of her first album.

Middle 5: I feel compelled to include these, even though my opinions on them aren’t that strong

Rihanna in Giambattista Valli (Source: Larry Busacca/Getty)

Though it was nice to see her in something different, this dress felt a little off-equity for the Rihanna we're used to lately. Also, it looked like a cupcake.

Beyond fashion: I want a cupcake now.

Katy Perry in Zuhair Murad (Source: Larry Busacca/Getty)

This dress is pretty, but I wish it was more subtle. I'm sure it was intentional, but the lining needs to be a little less sheer. LOVE her hair.

Beyond fashion: Could Katy Perry have had a better start to 2015? The Super Bowl performance might not have been up everyone's alley, but I think she put on a hell of a show. Her performance at the Grammys was beautiful. I'm trying to work "left shark" into this but it's not working.

Beyonce in Proenza Schouler (Source: Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP)

I have to mention Beyonce because she's Beyonce, but hasn't she done this look 100 other Times? I think her beachy waves are too long.

Beyond fashion: Her performance was perfectly lovely and she looked like an angel.

Jennifer Hudson in Tom Ford (Source: Christopher Polk/Getty)

Simple. Nice.

Beyond fashion: Jennifer's family suffered a terrible tragedy in 2008 when her mother, brother and nephew were killed. With her sister, Jennifer founded a charity (in her nephew's name) to provide holiday gifts and school supplies to underprivileged children in Chicago. I so respect that took this awful tragedy and has done something inspirational as a result.

Jane Fonda in Balmain (Source: Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP)

I don't really care for this jumpsuit (onesie?) but THIS WOMAN IS 77. Hot damn.

Beyond fashion: She's selling her property, Forked Lightning Ranch. The listing is here.

So what about the men?

It's nearly impossible to find out who anyone is wearing.

Blake Shelton, stop wearing jeans everywhere.

Ed Sheeran, keep doing your thing, even if you are mistaken for a waiter at the afterparty (which allegedly really happened).

Sam Smith, you owned the night so you go ahead and wear whatever you want. I liked the red suit, too.

Common, you're a goregous man and I think this was so appropriate for performing such a moving song.

And John Mayer, I don't care what everyone says, I still love you. Do your Buddy Holly thing. I enjoy it.

Couple of the Night

ENORMOUS PHOTO TO REPRESENT THEIR FANTASTICNESS. (Source: Getty Images)

Chrissy Teigen in Emilio Pucci and John Legend in Dolce & Gabbana. I wish his pants were tailored more (personal preference; I like a more European trouser), but I love this couple. I think her dress is so interesting. It's a little bare in places, but covered up enough in others that it doesn't feel over the top, and it's edginess is great for this award show.

John Legend is one of the best; his level of talent, in my opinion, surpasses many other people who were in the room with him this night. He's also a local boy (what up Dayton) so I have to love him. His performance of Glory with Common was moving, and deserving of the Golden Globe it won a few weeks ago.

Less than two weeks til the mecca of award show fashion: the Academy Awards!
